FUNERAL BLUES

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
— W. H. Auden

One year ago today, my dog died. He was 14 and almost half a year, having been born on the 14th of August 2017.

And he was the best dog that ever walked this godforsaken planet, and I miss him 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and I always will.

Some will say that a dog is a dog and worth less than a human, and feelings like the ones above are too much for a dog. They are wrong.

My dog was worth more than any human to me because he was my best friend in the world.

Because in our individual heart of hearts, all our true loves are equal – dog, human, parakeet. Not the same, but equal.

By the way, if you love this poem, you should try listening to Tom Hiddleston reading it; beautiful, just beautiful.

Thanks for reading! I hope you found it valuable and worth your time! Until next time, remember to get your facts straight and that whatever good times you have will never come back as bad times,
